Making the rounds at London’s Silicon Milk Roundabout

“I was pretty apprehensive about job fairs. In my mind, they were like corporate speed dating with lots of suits and CVs,” stated Chris Regan, Product Delivery Manager, who joined Labs after attending last year’s Silicon Milk Roundabout (SMR). “SMR broke all my prior perceptions of job fairs.”

It can be awkward approaching complete strangers for a job, but SMR is known for a casual atmosphere fuelled by good coffee, craft beer and the occasional oddball business promotion stunt, such as two enormous llamas that roamed the fair on year, posing for selfies with those seeking jobs in London’s flourishing tech scene.

“The Octopus Labs team was really engaging,” recalls Chris of his encounter the Labs team at last year’s SMR. “They were interested in me, rather than 'selling' the role. The most impressive thing, though, was the follow-up. The following Monday morning, I had a phone interview, a set of face to face interviews lined up, and a presentation booked for later that week.”

This year’s SMR takes place over two days, April 27 and 28. Day 1 focuses on product, design and marketing. Day 2 is set for developers and data science. Both days are free, but space is limited. Attendees must apply in advance through the SMR website.

For those attending their first SMR, Chris offers some advice. “I was really grateful I planned ahead. I went with a list of people I wanted to see and worked my way down the list. Practically speaking it’s a long day, wear trainers (everyone else will be) and your biggest smile. It’s tiring but a lot of fun.”
