Labs Vocab (Part 2): O - Z

Part 2 of our glossary of useful Labs terminology. Review Part 1 here.

Octopus Academy:  Octopus Academy is a hub for digital skills and personal growth. OA provides young, commercially-minded individuals the tools to become the next generation of digital economy leaders.

Octopus Giving:  Octopus Giving is the charitable arm of Octopus, supporting small charities with big ambitions.

Octopus Values:  Be bold. Be straightforward. Be helpful.

OfficeVibe:  OfficeVibe is an employee engagement monitoring tool. Every week employees receive a short questionnaire that helps managers understand the vibe in the office (hence the name). Read more here.

OKR (Objectives and Key Results):  The OKR framework helps define company and team objectives, ensuring employees work well together and make measurable contributions.

ProdPad:  Propad is a product management tool used by product managers for creating product strategy roadmaps. (see: Roadmaps)

Resource Guru:  Resource Guru is a scheduling application for booking and rescheduling meetings, conference rooms, call lines and other resources. This scheduling information is then shared on a single, coordinated calendar.

Retros (Retrospectives):  At the end of each Sprint, teams gather together and reflect on what went well, what could be improved, and what isn’t working. Retros are key to the continual iteration process in which products are constantly being evaluated and improved upon.

Roadmap:  A plan to match short-term and long-term goals with specific tech capabilities to help meet those goals. Roadmaps create a shared understanding of what is being done and why. Roadmaps help determine the amount of time and resources needed to deliver the features and functionality of any product.

Roadmap Meetings:  These product meetings are not a status update, but a chance to deepen the shared understanding between the project team and stakeholders — and to check whether everyone is still headed in the right direction.

Sanctus:  Individual coaching sessions to improve the mental health and personal wellbeing of employees.

Scrum:  Scrum is a framework within which people can address complex adaptive problems, while productively and creatively delivering products of the highest possible value.

Scrum Team:  A virtual, cross-functional team, that is lead by a Product Manager and is formed to manage a particular project or product.

Show and Tell:  Every two weeks, an hour is set aside for employees to present their 10% Club side projects and become inspired by projects that other employees are working on. (see: 10% Club)

Showcase:  Every two weeks, key business stakeholders are invited to view the work of the previous Sprint. These Sprint Showcases allow for comments and provide feedback.

Slack:  Slack is a cloud-based communication platform that ties the entire company together. It provides messaging, collaboration tools, smart-alec remarks and questionable memes. Communication in Slack happens in channels, organized by project, topic, team, etc.

Springboard (formerly Octoden):  A programme to assist employees in developing their own entrepreneurial ideas. Springboard is designed to give employees the tools, advice and encouragement they need to create their own businesses.

System Development Life Cycle (SDLC):  A term used to describe the process of planning, creating, testing, and deploying an information system.

Udemy:  Labs has its own Udemy portal, giving employees access to a plethora of online courses where anyone can learn and study everything from Machine Learning to Social Psychology. Read more here.

Food Island (formerly “The Usual Place”):  Labs employees, returning from visits to their home countries, enjoy sharing their favourite treats on Food Island. This magical place, inhabited by delicious foods, is easily located on top the filing cabinets in the middle of the Labs desk area.

User Story:  A Product Manager articulates the requirements of any software that is needed in a User Story. A single item on the Roadmap may constitute many User Stories. It may be a small feature, a change in written copy, an update in design, or part of a larger set of features.

Wellness:  Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy and fulfilling life. Wellness is more than being free from illness, it is a dynamic process of change and growth.

Work From Home (WFH):  Labs encourages a healthy work-life balance and flexible working. Employees have the option to work from home or other remote locations from time to time.
