The Octopus Labs Dispatch
Octopus Labs was well represented at this year’s Women in Technology Conference, taking place at Silicon Roundabout. So much so, the Labs office at 33 Holborn was said to feel strangely empty. As a key sponsor of this year’s event, Octopus brought speakers, held workshops, and managed an exhibition booth to give attendees a taste of the work being done at Labs.
Over the past two years, the Women of Silicon Roundabout Conference has become an important forum for working towards solutions within the tech world, while simultaneously addressing gender inequality. On 11th May, London’s Tobacco Dock will once again welcome 1,200 leading women in technology for a day of interactive panel discussions, talks and workshops.
For many businesses, IT departments are responsible for maintaining the current business functions, and kept hidden away from any sexy innovation, design or developments going on. But, with Octopus increasingly becoming a digitally-led business, Labs realised it needed to change all that.
On the 30th March, some of London’s top investors and alternative finance leaders will descend on The Brewery in Central London for this year’s AltFi Europe Summit 2017.
Students from INSEAD, one of the world’s top business schools, recently showed up on the doorstep of 33 Holborn looking for insight on London’s fintech scene. They were sent up to Sam Handfield Jones, Director of Labs, and Ruzbeh Bacha, Founder of CityFalcon, for the inside scoop.

“By the time High Street is aware of Octopus Cash, they won’t have any customers left”, joked Sam Handfield-Jones, a Director of Octopus Labs, upon the launch of Octopus Cash. Given the notoriously slow response rate of the UK’s biggest banks, Sam might not be too far off the mark.
After launching only just last summer, Octopus Choice, our P2P lending platform, has already garnered top industry recognition, winning two AltFi award categories and taking runner up in a third.
The 7-foot tall llamas were just two of the many impressive visitors herding into this year’s Silicon Milkroundabout. Attendance at the twice annual job fair, continues to boom, attracting startups and other businesses looking to bolster their team with highly-skilled tech talent. “It has proven to be very effective recruitment tool for us,” said Katya Nerush, a software engineer at Octopus Labs, who was among the three prized hires Octopus plucked from last year’s SMR job fair.
It was only last April that Octopus Investments launched their new peer-to-peer lending product, Octopus Choice. Since then, its reputation has continually risen in the realm of alternative financing. “We were very happy,” said Vanessa Iman of Octopus Choice about their AltFi Awards People’s Choice nomination. “(It) makes us feel what we do is appealing to our audience.”
